A blog-style peak in my sketchbook, my work in progress and other brain dumps.

It has been a while, it has been busy..
Where to begin? Well, I started teaching at Howest DAE in september last year. Being around students and my enthousiast colleageus all day sparkes an urge in me to create, to explore and to keep learning. It feels good to have that itch again.
Especially the need to create 3D projects. After an entire day behind the computer making client projects, I didn’t feel the need to put myself behind my laptop in the evening to work on my own projects. So, that spark slowly dimmed since I’ve graduated. Instead I found joy in scale model making, drawing, reading or doing sport.
Buuuu-ut ever since I started teaching 3D to the first year students, the itch has been back. I feel inspired again and I feel motivated again to spend my spare time behind my computer. It really helps that I can choose my own projects of course. Next to that, I try not to push myself to finish a certain project in a certain amount of time. I’m enjoying not having to work towards a deadline and I love being able to work on a project whenever I feel like it.That been said, it does mean that my scattered brain has started – what seems as – a million projects. So, here’s a small overview of all my work in progress:
1. The Sultan’s attributes:
This project is inspired by the concept of Du’rum, the Giant Lizard’s Master by Tooth Wu. You can find the original artwork here: https://www.artstation.com/artwork/eeogw
I started modelling, sculpting and unwrapping the character and his attributes after I graduated but abandoned the project along the way. Recently I’ve picked it up again since I still like the concept.Laure-from-the-past had made some decisions that Laure-from-the-present wouldn’t, so I’m starting from scratch:
1. Instead of a low poly game character, I want to challenge myself with some high poly modelling.
2. Initially I planned to make handpainted textures. Now I want to explore different ways of texturing (PBR, stylized, toon,…. )
3. I started the entire project and soon found myself burned out and no longer focussed on quality, so in order to keep myself engaged I planned smaller steps to work on, like tackling the attributes first to set a standard for the project.2. The Japanese shrine:
In order to fullfill my storytelling needs, I’ve started working on a little Japanese island scene. The goal is to keep it lowpoly and handpainted while having an optimized scene. At this point, the elements are in the scene and I’m starting to finetune the shape language, unwrap and color blockout of each of them .
3. The Lighthouse:
Very slow progress has been made on the scale model of the lighthouse. I added details on the lighthouse, added rocks and covered everything in a base layer of grey spray paint. Next step: taking some progress pictures before painting!
Hope you’ve enjoyed my little update.
See you soon,

During the first week of July, I’ve participated in an online challenge called Animal Adventures Week. It’s the fourth year three illustrators team up to make a list of seven prompts that inspire other creatives to draw animals and their adventures. I always like the posts during that week, it makes me want to draw myself, so I did! Since the limited amount of time, I wanted to prioritise on getting my ideas out, and focus on values and composition. Although they’re not the most polished, I’m pretty happy with my black and white illustrations and mini animations.
See you soon, Laure

I love making photo studies and I wanted to share some I’ve made during June.
I like photo studies because they’re simple: choose a picture and start to paint without having to think about the composition, lighting, color palette, etc. It’s very relaxing, yet at the same time I feel like I’m doing something purposfull. Although I don’t overthink every detail and try to stay loose in my technique, I’m soaking in the things that make something stand out, things that make an image work. As well, getting more aquinted with color and color schemes since I feel I’m lacking knowledge in that area.
